You are listening to yourself, more than anyone else. Neuroscience shows that repeated self-talk literally rewires your brain. Negative plasticity, which is when we feed our brain repeated negative thoughts, strengthen the brain’s stress, fear, and self-criticism circuits. In due time, they become one's default settings.
The good news?
Just as the brain can learn the wrong habits, it can also unlearn them. Here are some things you must do to start the process.
1- I am not smart enough.
Why - Working memory shrinks under the stress of such thoughts. Intelligence is not fixed.
2- It is too late for me.
Why - Stimulation and belief keep the brain plastic. Such thoughts kill neuroplasticity by reducing engagement and novelty factor.
3- If I ignore it, it will go away.
Why - Avoidance increases fear-based neural pathways. It increases anxiety.
4-I do not have time.
Why - Closes down goal-oriented executive function. Reinforces avoidance and scarcity mindset.
5- I will never be like XYZ.
Why - Comparison shuts down reward-centres and triggers feelings of inadequacy, low self-esteem and demotivation.
6- I always mess up.
Why - Activates criticism and rumination, lowers resilience and triggers Default Mode Network.
7- I am not good at this.
Why - Closes learning pathways. Hampers growth mindset, which helps the brain grow and learn.
